A Few Words About Reproductions
Whether to reproduce original works is an issue that every artist must address at some point. To be perfectly honest, I have struggled with this process at various points in my career. While I have had some success with reproductions, commonly called giclees, I now prefer to concentrate on original oils of various sizes and pricepoints. I have some remaining giclees available, and if I am able to find a satisfactory printing situation locally, may revisit reproductions in the future.
Giclee (zee-clay) is the most modern digital method of fine art printing. Giclee is a French word that roughly translated “to spray.” In this case the word describes a process used to print high resolution digital files. Giclee has become an internationally recognized method of producing very high quality reproductions of collectable artwork, photographs and computer-generated art.
The original painting is scanned with a specially designed scanner and then stored digitally being sent to a high resolution printer. Ultraviolet light-stable pigmented inks, with longevity of more than 150 years, are used with continuous tone technology to create thousands of colors.
The giclee process lays these pigment-based inks down onto various mediums, including archival paper and canvas. The result is a print of extraordinary quality with higher resolution than that of lithography and a broader tonal range with colors more intense than that of serigraphy. Unlike poster prints done by offset lithography, these reproductions are engineered to retain their splendid colors well beyond our lifetimes.
At present, I have no plans to make additional giclees or reproduction of existing works. A select few of my works have been processed for reproduction, and if you wish to contact me for more information on these reproductions, please do and I will try to work with you if at all possible.
